Conversations XMPP client

Finally I found a messenger that I really like : Conversations, it uses the XMMP (formerly known as Jabber) protocol. It has not only encryption but it respects my privacy, I don’t need a phone number or e-mail adress to register an account at a XMPP server*. Encryption is done by OMEO, OTR (Off The Record) or OpenPGP.

Conversations is an Android app, you can download it in the PlayStore, but then you have to pay. If you install the F-droid app on your Android device you can download it legally for free
You can find more clients here

* Signal and WhatsApp have good encryption, but you need your phone number to register AND you have to give your number to people otherwise they can’t call or send you messages. An other problem of WhatsApp is the spying by Facebook.
Telegram needs a phonenumber to register, but you can use a nickname so your number stays private.
Wire don’t need a phonenumber, it uses only a nickname.

Resumed Linux support

January 7 I resumed Linux support due to the demand for support because of the End Of Life of Linux Mint 13 LTS, Ubuntu LTS versions 12.04 and Windows Vista.

The service is still free if you come to my place.
I don’t have transportation, so I can only visit you if it’s not to far by public transport, and you pay the expences.

If necessary I can give remote support by mail, messenger service or phone.

See also the old support page in Dutch, and in English (Google Translate)

Debian 6.0 Long Term Support reaching end-of-life

The Debian Long Term Support (LTS) Team hereby announces that Debian 6.0 (“squeeze”) support will reach its end-of-life on February 29, 2016, five years after its initial release on February 6, 2011.

There will be no further security support for Debian 6.0.

The LTS Team will prepare the transition to Debian 7 (“wheezy”), which is the current oldstable release. The LTS team will take over support from the Security Team on April 26, 2016.

Debian 7 will also receive Long Term Support for five years after its initial release with support ending in May 2018.

Debian and its LTS Team would like to thank all contributing users, developers and sponsors who are making it possible to extend the life of previous stable releases, and who have made this LTS a success.

If you rely on Debian LTS, please consider joining the team, providing patches, testing or funding the efforts.

Windows Vista reaches End Of Life

Windows Vista is in about 1 year End Of Live.

It might be a good idea to install a Linux distribution besides your Vista, so you can get used to it 😉

Some great alternatives for Windows Vista are :

Debian GNU/Linux
Linux Mint LTS / Linux Mint Debian Edition
Lubuntu LTS
Ubuntu MATE LTS
Xubuntu LTS

Resize VirtualBox disk image (.vdi)

After working a few years with my virtual Windows I needed to increase my virtual disk.
To find out the name of the virtual disk type the next command in a terminal :
VBoxManage list hdds

To resize the disk (in this case 50MB) type the next command in a terminal :
VBoxManage modifyhd "Windows 7.vdi" --resize 50000

Source : VirtualBox documentation

Tip : When you create a new virtual machine, don’t use capitals and or spaces, it’s easier without them if you ever want to resize the disk.
If I had named the machine windows7, the command would be :
VBoxManage modifyhd windows7.vdi --resize 50000
After creating a new virtual machine you can change the name to e.g. Windows 7 or whatever you like 😉

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS from Alpha to Final

When the code name for Ubuntu 16.04 was revealed, I changed the repositories from 15.10 (Wily) immediately to 16.04 (Xenial).
Yesterday I got the first updates.
I have Ubuntu MATE and Xubuntu both running in Virtualbox.

In this post I’ll keep you informed about the progress.

Update 27 october 2015 :

MATE version had about 100 MB updates, Xubuntu about 200 MB.

Update 14 februari 2016 :

Besides Ubuntu-MATE and Xubuntu I’ve also installed Lubuntu and Ubuntu (Unity desktop).

All 4 versions feel very solid allready. Although I still don’t like the Unity desktop it has made a huge improvement over the years.

Ubuntu 15.10 MATE beta

Just installed this version in Virtualbox. Although it’s a beta, it’s already very stable.

The reason I installed it is because this is the last version before 16.04, the next Ubuntu LTS, which will be the base for Linux Mint 18 LTS.

Ubuntu 16.04 will be available in april 2016, Linux Mint as usual about 1 month later.

I’ll keep this version running until the first alpha of 16.04 so I can see how it develops.

Switching from Debian GNU/Linux to Linux Mint 17.2 LTS

Yes I’m switching from Debian GNU/Linux to Linux Mint 17.2 LTS. Although Debian GNU/Linux is still my favorite, Linux Mint has at the moment 1 big advantage for me :

I can easily switch between English and Spanish, something that I can’t manage in Debian, maybe I’m overlooking something 😉

Why is that important? I’m studying Spanish and Linux System Administration, so it’s very handy when my computers can easily switch between those languages 😉

One thing that doesn’t change is the desktop, I’ll stick to MATE.

How long will I stay with Linux Mint? Well that’s hard to say, both studies are going to take some time. As long as I’m studying I’ll stick to Mint, or in the mean time it must be possible to switch easily languages in Debian GNU/Linux.
