Micro$uck$ is pushing its spyware again to Window$ 7 and 8

Here we go again. Microsoft re-released the Windows 7 telemetry update KB2952664 and the Windows 8.1 telemetry update KB2976978 yesterday.

You can check out our October 2016 article on the last re-release of the updates.

Windows 7 and 8.1 users may still know these updates as they were the prerequisites for Microsoft’s infamous Get Windows 10 (GWX) campaign that haunted users who did not want to upgrade to Windows 10 for almost a year.

Windows Vista reaches End Of Life

Windows Vista is in about 1 year End Of Live.

It might be a good idea to install a Linux distribution besides your Vista, so you can get used to it 😉

Some great alternatives for Windows Vista are :

Debian GNU/Linux
Linux Mint LTS / Linux Mint Debian Edition

Windows 10 upgrade terror and tracking software Windows 7, Part 2

Microsoft is pushing the Windows 10 upgrade files to your system, again …

Yes indeed, today I received the unwanted “updates” again. Fortunately I have no automatic updates, but I get notified wich updates are available.

The next updates install tracking software (spyware) and the Windows 10 upgrade* on your computer :

KB3035583
KB3068708
KB3075249
KB3080149

* I don’t consider Windows 10 an upgrade, to my opinion it’s a huge downgrade when you’re using Windows 7 or even Vista.

Reinstalling Windows XP and changing the language

If you need to reinstall Windows XP but you can’t find your key anymore, don’t panic, there is a solution 😉

On this website are instructions how to do it.

Ever wanted to change the system language? Here are instructions how to do it.

Both solutions I’ve tried in Virtualbox and they work, but :

After installing XP DON’T upgrade your system.

First activate your system, then install the Service Pack in the desired language, reboot and get the latest updates (yes, updating still works)

On my system almost everything is in English, some folder names are still in Dutch but they can be renamed.

Windows XP must be considered UNSAFE, use it only if you have no other option.

My virtual machines

After I quit with Windows 10 I reinstalled my other virtual machines, except Windows 7. From the top :

Debian testing : This will be the next stable version of Debian GNU/Linux. I like to see what is going to happen and how the development goes on. [GNOME desktop}

Huayra : It’s an Argentine Linux, based on Debian stable, made for education in Argentina. By default everything is in Spanish, but if you know the root password you can add any language you want 😉 [MATE desktop]

Linux Mint Debian Edition : As the name says, Based on Debian stable instead of Ubuntu. A bit more difficult then the main edition, but easier to install and config then Debian. [Cinnamon desktop]

Linux Mint LTS : The main edition, based on Ubuntu LTS. Very well finished and easy to install for beginners. [Xfce desktop]

Ubuntu LTS : Ubuntu LTS = Long Term Support. LTS versions get 5 years security updates. Although it’s not very important for personnel use (every 2 year a LTS version is released), for businesses it’s important. Based on Debian, it’s a robust and user friendly Linux. [MATE desktop]

openSUSE : A very solid Linux version. Instead of the Debian package management system (.deb) it uses the Red Hat package management system (.rpm). I only use this version for study, so I can work with both package systems. [GNOME desktop]

Windows 7 : Unfortanately I need sometimes Windows, for example to DeDRM an Ebook. Although I don’t like Windows, this one is the best you can get at the moment.

Exit Windows 10

Yes, you see it right, I quit with the Tech Preview of Windows 10.

When I started with it back in march it looked good. That every keystroke was logged and sent to Microsoft didn’t bother me, for crashreports it was usefull.

But by the end of july Windows 10 was officially released, unfortunately the logging kept going on.

Lately I was wondering my self if I really wanted to go on testing a product from a company that kept spying on his customers. Yesterday I made my decision, I quit with Windows 10 and deleted it from Virtualbox, maybe I’ll give it a new try in a couple of years from now.

Windows 10 upgrade terror and tracking software Windows 7

Microsoft is pushing the Windows 10 upgrade files to your system.

Even though Microsoft says my virtual machine running Windows 7 is not capable of running Windows 10*, I also got this crap on my system ….

Luckily it can easy be undone, just remove updates KB3035583 and KB2952664.
You can find detailed instructions at TechJourney

Edit :

When you’re removing the updates, don’t forget these 6 updates, they install tracking software on your system.

* And that is strange, Windows 10 Insider Preview runs perfect in Virtualbox 😉

Goodbye Microsoft

I’m really glad I don’t need MS Office or Windows. Everything* I need to do I can do with Linux / LibreOffice.

Microsoft dumps Windows10 installation files on your PC whether you like it or not
and
Office 2016 will force you to install updates

* In the rare occasion I need to de-DRM an ebook I use Windows7 in VirtualBox

If you want to try Linux, take a look at Linux Mint, it’s the perfect Linux for starters.

Windows 10 Pro Technical Preview build 9926

yes, I’m running Windows 10 in Virtualbox, host Debian 8.

Why, simple, because I can 😉 More seriously, I like to see what it is going to be. (the same I’ve done with Vista, 7 and 8)

To be honest, I don’t like the gui, same crap as 8. So I installed ClassicShell with Windows 7 menu, and that looks and works a lot better.

Except the standard menu it’s looks good. More important, it even works good.

The downsides :
It needs a lot more memory then Windows 7
Still no support for Linux filesystems

Update 22 may, 2015 :

At the moment I’m running build 10122.

It still works good in VirtualBox, but I’m not going to “upgrade” my Windows 7 for free to Windows 10.

All I have to do with Windows (and that’s not much 😉 ) I can do with Windows 7.
If necessary I’ll check out Windows again in 2019 (Windows 7 support ends january 2020)
